Lovn' the Libraries
The library system here is pretty impressive. Not only is their kid section about 1 1/2 times the size of the whole library we just came from.... but there's also the media section about as large and then the rest of the library and the downstairs with theatre and resource center!! Then there are also two other libraries in the Upper Arlington area, and the libraries out of this community just 10 minutes down the street. So - aside from their impressive presence - they have put together some great activities. Every Tuesday and Thursday we can go to one of the libraries to be entertained and taught. And on some of the saturdays there are activities for the whole family. (We went and met the fire department last week - sorry no picts - but the kids had a blast and have fireman hats to boot!)
This saturday in particular there was a Russian themed activity that followed the apple cider activity. We were able to bring some apples and after reading some books about apple cider and apple presses, the kids were able to see their apples be smashed into wonderful tasting apple cider! Weston as usual had his "happy" face on, and Tyler seems to be getting the same thing - the look of focused and intense questioning thought. Elayna looked for a while, but when it just kept going, she lost interest and found great amusement in posing for John!
After the apples we went inside to participate in the Museum of Art activity which as I said early was based on Russia. There was a string quartet downstairs in their mini-theatre playing short selections by Russian composers. VERY cool! I loved watching Tyler watch the musicians.. he just smiled and nodded and tapped his foot in time.. Afterwards he asked when he and Weston would be able to "get one of those" - a violin! I was excited about that!
Then we went upstairs to make our own Russian inspired treasure boxes. Weston's ended up being completely jeweled, very precisely, with feathers stuck on the top (rather random I thought). Tyler's was covered with paper, then added string, then beads, then stickers then feathers too... It just kept going until it went to far! Elayna did best with stickers - she found all the pink letter stickers she could, then added a few brown and teal ones for good measure and we ended with pink string on top. Anything that is pink is by the laws of the universe - hers!!! So off course - this is her pink box! We stopped and left quickly when she started looking at other boxes that were pink and tried to claim ownership.
It was a great day and lots of fun, even though we missed some of the other offerings there. Life is good!
