Young Scholars' interpretation of Christmas

I meant to post this earlier, but had a lot of technical difficulties when I tried to post the videos. yes, they are user errors, thank goodness John is here to rescue me!

--------
For a few reasons John and I decided to enroll our kids into a charter school in Pennsylvania. Probably the most valid reason was that since we are just renting we wanted to put the kids into a school that they could stay in next year too so we didn't have to move them, yet again, into a different elementary school. Young Scholars of Central PA or YSCP is the school we found and for the most part really like it. It is very culturally diverse and academically on par or above the countries average standards.  All students take Chinese and Spanish everyday and most of the faculty was born and raised outside of the US for most of their youth... all good things in my book.  But like most schools there are a few things that I don't agree with or appreciate, but for now the scales are tipping on the good end.

Their Christmas program though was a good reminder of just what kind of school we are sending our kids too.  Sadly they are so desperate to work on acadmeics that their cultural programs may be suffering, and as hard as they try to be culturally and religiously diverse and accepting, they have taken any meaning out of Christmas and made it a nothing holiday. Better yet a "winter break".  I was looking forward to songs from different cultures or religions or something with character and meaning, but what we got was pretty vanilla and boring.  The school is still a good school, regardless of how they celebrate but I am no longer certain we'll be staying after we move into our permanent residence.  Though giving up the language classes may be hard, and Weston and Tyler get to take fencing after school so that's pretty cool too!!

Anyway - for your listening pleasure and/or dis pleasure... here are highlights from the Winter/Christmas concert.

I laugh at how out of sync most of the class is, especially Elayna (front and center pink shirt with pink Girraffe!)  What you can't hear is how the entire class is off by a half to an entire beat from the music being played as background accompaniment!

This was just funny... I couldn't understand anything! The parts I did understand were pretty bad! But the kids had fun, and I guess that is what matters..

So John put all the videos together into one, not sure why, but it's done... and he had to mess with fixing it in the fist place since I couldn't load the videos before. So I'm leaving it.

There is a song by Elayna's class, where no one is together or on beat!  The school butchered one of the most beloved songs of Christmas... "We wish you a Merry Christmas" which was performed by each of the groups, and never got any better. All in the name of cultural and religious acceptance. Such a sad commentary on our society today.  Tyler's class and other 2nd grade with their recorders. Yup, practicing hour at home was always fun!!!  I love that the teacher off to the right (Tyler's teacher - LOVE her) is laughing too! And then Weston's class. No one is looking too joyful for such a 'joyful' song!  But they are all grown up and in 5th grade, so I guess they feel too cool to sing in an assembly or something like that. And yup - he's still so little compared to everyone else. I really hope he starts to grow soon, but I just don't see him growing very tall at all. oh well!

So For what it's worth... Merry Christmas. Merry CHRISTmas.  MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!  There is a reason for the season, and I think we should always remember Him even if we don't all want to believe in Christianity.

Christmas day

Christmas was nice, mostly because it meant the end of a long season. But since John and I take great pride in the relaxed nature of our Christmas festivities it really was a nice day!

Our routine you ask??  We wake up no earlier than 7:30, the kids are allowed to go get their stockings and bring them in to our bed to open with mom and dad.  Once we've all had a chance to open and revel in our stocking goodies we go get ready for our Breakfast.  We have a nice big breakfast with enough good things to keep us fuled through the day, then we clean up and John and I will shower or at least John will and I'll get somewhat ready to be somewhat presentable for pictures.

Then.... we open presents!  One at a time and stop between rounds giving everyone time to play with their toys before we go on to open more presents.  This year we had a bag with names in it and which ever name was drawn was the person to go pick a present for someone else to open.  We had a good time and the kids seemed to as well. I think our total present opening time this year was until about 7 at night! We had a nice brunch in the middle of it all and were able to talk with family on phone and video chat.  Erik and Min were able to spend a good time talking with us all the way from Japan!  They had our name for Christmas this year and sent us the best goodies from Japan - it was so awesome and the kids loved it.

We were lucky to get authentic English crackers to open with our breakfast. A nice bonus for a wonderful morning!

Christmas Card & Letter

Our letter, long as it is, it's a fun read!

Merry Christmas 2013!

A lot has happened for us in the last year and as overwhelming as things occasionally were or sometimes still seem to be, I can’t help but think of how blessed our little family has been.  I am constantly reminded of the Lords hand in our life, evidenced in the simple and sometimes more complicated events that we’ve experienced.  How grateful I am to know that there is a God who knows and loves my family, and me, and who is always here to help us.  How grateful I am for the Christmas Season that makes a dreary winter exciting and wonderful with bright and merry lights, happy music and fun decorations. All of it helping to remind us of what is really important; learning to be better people and doing more to show our love to our family, friends and everyone around us!

In the last year John finished his PhD and moved our family to State College, Pennsylvania to take a job with Penn State. So we moved from Columbus Ohio in June and spent the summer in Utah with family and friends that we hadn’t seen in a few years while we waited for our housing to become available. It was a busy summer with lots of playing! The school year started without much of a break after making the drive from Utah back East the end of August. John went straight into teaching. Weston started 5th, Tyler 3rd and Elayna 1st grade.  I kept busy trying to keep things together and get our family settled. As I look back now, it’s not much more than a flash of memories.  Memories, I regret that I didn’t write down.  So to keep from missing out on our family history any more, I’m going to try blogging again in case you want to keep tabs on our less than perfect moments!  jjhowell.blogspot.com

We miss having all of you, our dear friends close and conveniently able to come over for dinner when we want. I hope we can do better at staying in contact, even though we seem to be worlds away.  You’ve made us better people and our life happier for knowing you.  Know that we love you and think of you often.  Since we are renting this year, we’ll be moving again this summer, but after that we hope to have an address that stays the same for several years!!

We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a full year of love and joy and blessings in 2014!

All our Love
John, Jennifer,  Weston, Tyler & Elayna

As we’ve done before, here are some comments and conversations from our kids this last year.  Less than in previous years, but hopefully still enough to give you a chuckle or two!
W – Weston, (10)  T- Tyler (8), E- Elayna (6) ,  M or me – is me, Jenn!   J – John
Hopefully you can decipher it all!

We had a lesson on responsibility with Grandma Sandy and Grandpa Ed as the guest speakers.
Grandma talked about doing what needed to be done so there was more time for things like Warcraft...
E -"What, not warcraft - Minecraft"
Grandma didn't know the difference
E - "Warcraft is where we hit each other in the face"
---
Elayna's conversation with Aunt Becca
E - "I have some very difficult boobs"
Becca gives a face... "what"???
E - "I mean boo-boos"
--
One of the best nights with Grandma/Grandpa and Jason/Becca over the Christmas break was when we just talked, did puzzles, looked at old Howell pictures and colored. Well Becca and Tyler/Elayna colored Mandalas. Becca showed Elayna her finished work
E "Wow - you are a professional colorer"
---
E - I'm so hungry.. I'm hungry like a pig
---
Making pork loin for dinner one night, Elayna came in to help.
E - Ohh, mom what is that? Are we having chicken for dinner?
M - Yes (Chicken is the generic for meat in our house)
E - Is that chicken chicken; cow chicken, or human chicken?
We had a quick discussion of how we don't eat other people.
---
At dinner the topic of Character Club at the elementary school came up.  Each month the teacher chooses 2 kids who have been good examples of the months character trait chosen by the principle.. Like kindness, honesty, respect, etc.. Then those kids get to eat lunch with the Principle and get a special treat like ice cream or popsicles.  All 3 kids have done this a few times (happy mommy moments) , but this month only Weston and Elayna were chosen. Tyler was on a grumpy trip....  (They try and get all the kids at least one turn so it's not ever a reflection of being bad if you're not chosen either)

T - that's not fair that both of you got it.
Mom - You've done it before
T - ya, but I didn't get to go this time.  (talking to Weston and Elayna) did you guys get to eat together
E - No...
T - so it's still not fair. It's like an unbaked pie
all of us - What???

T - (pointing to Weston ) You're the pie and (talking to Elayna) you're the crust and I'm the oven. Without me, you're just an unbaked pie.
-----
Elayna was the star of the week in her class, which meant that she was able to bring in things to share with the class. Sadly I wasn't in helping this day, but was given the scoop by the mom who was, and Elayna's teacher and teacher's aid later...   Elayna hadn't brought anything in to share, but confidently grabbed the microphone and said she had a song to sing for the class and went something like this.... and lasted for a very, very long time as I was told.

when the light is red, stop
stop when the light is red, oh stop when the light is red, stop when the light is red
if the light is red, stop
if the light is green go
Stop when the light is red, stop when the light is red,
and so on and so on!!!

Mrs. Miller asked her when she finally finished (apparently all the adults were waiting for the song to end for several minutes!) if she had learned that song in preschool. Elayna confidently answered, No - I just made it up
----
In the car driving one afternoon…
Elayna- "mom, did you get scared when you got married"
M - what?
E  - when you were little were you scared when you would think about getting married
M - no, I don't think I thought about it much. When I got older I wanted to get married though
E - I'm scared to get married
M - that's okay, you don't have to get married if you don't want to
E - okay
Tyler - "but you should get married, that's the right thing to do"
M - only if she loves someone enough to get married,
E - that's why I'm scared to get married, there are just so many boys I love. I don't know which one to choose.
----
Walking down the street...
W- I want to tell you something. When you spit upside down it makes snot go up your nose.
M-what? (Repeating what he just said).
W-oh I mean spit goes up your nose.
----
E-look my thumb still has its double joint - holding her hand up showing us her very double jointed thumb (still kind of freaky!!!)
W- it's always going to be like that for the rest of your life
E- what!!!!! I'm going to turn Chinese!!!!??????
( It took a while to convince her she would not ever become Chinese. I’m still not sure she even knows what 'being Chinese' means or why she related that to being double jointed?? )
----
7/23  Going up to Birdseye
E-this keeps going higher and higher and higher
J-aren't you glad we didn't hike in
E- ya, I want to be in the car so I don't fall off the side and table my head
-----
J-hey look Tyler, a dove (he had been studying birds in school the previous year)
T- oh how cute. My favorite part of nature are the birds
E- my favorite part of nature are the animals
----
We saw a mom and 2 baby deer on the way up to the birdseye cabin.
E- oh how cute. I love littler reindeer. I wish I was a deer so I could jump over fences
-----
Finding streams of water along the way
John and the boys were discussing water and why we brought some since we can't drink out of the creeks
T/W - why don't you just use your filter
John-because its not good tasting water
W- why
John- because its ditch water
T- what does that mean
Me-it means it tastes like dirt
John-and cow spit
W/t - like cow spit?
E- oh, maybe cow spit tastes gross. (Very matter of fact – like it had never been thought of before!)
----

Once we got to the cabin, now surrounded by cows Elayna got out of the car and started yelling over and over
“Cows, STOP mooing” It didn’t do much good!
----
T-Grandpa, when is the hunting season for 'meat' cows?  (Referring to cows they sell for meat instead of dairy cows)
------
Getting ready to shoot guns at targets, Elayna got really excited to go shooting. Then realizing we were shooting targets she pulls me close and says, looking disappointed and confused "but I wanted to shoot the cows"
-----
W- I've come to the stage in my life when I don't like cereal
-----
Tyler learned how to tie a few knots, now he walks around with a rope and is constantly tying knots, showing everyone what he has learned and asking to be shown new ones!  Grandma is very nice to play 'cats cradle' with him all the time!!
-----
(One morning, telling Elayna not to lock doors on people and get ready for swim lessons)
E- mom, myself keeps telling me not to listen to you because you are the meanest mom ever.
Me- hmmm, and what do you tell your self?
E-nothing
------
At the soccer fields one afternoon Elayna urgently needed a bathroom! Lucky for us there was a port-a-potty. She finished and came out asking if I had sanitizer because there wasn't any in the port-a-potty. I couldn't find the bottle I usually have so she looked at me and proceeded to lick her hands and rub them together, licking again because she needed a little more liquid to rub the first off. Then wiped it on her pants! Ya, I was grossed out. She just looked at me, shrugged her shoulders than ran off to play again.
-----
9/8
E-I'm not even sure I was born. I just remember when I was two, no actually when I was three, no two.  I just woke up and couldn't remember how I was a baby. I just don't remember. That's weird isn't it.
-----
9/16/13
Ty used the bathroom twice in close succession. The first time I had to remind him to wash his hands the second time he remembered but when I asked if he had wiped his bottom he just stopped and stared at me.
"I'm going to start remembering next time"
M- you really do need to
T- mom, do you know how to to make those words that you sew onto fabric with string.
M - (not sure what he was talking about) I'm not sure, but I could probably figure it out
T- I think you should make one of those that says "remember to wipe your bottom and wash your hands". You could probably find a pattern on the computer
M- (realizing what he meant) you want me to cross-stitch and embroider a sign that says to wipe your bottom and wash your hands
T-(completely serious) yes, I think you would really like doing it. Grandma really likes doing crafts like that.
Weston- oh ya, that would be really good and then we could hang it in the bathroom.
(I'm still wondering WHAT, just remember!!!!!)
-------
At the Soccer fields for the games on Saturday  (We happen to be surrounded by farms!)
E- why does it smell like reindeer poop?
-------
E- are you so proud of me? It was my first time obeying you!
Ha! - referring to doing her morning chores without being reminded. Obviously, she's proud of herself!
-------
Saturday chores on a Monday home from school.
T- mom, now I just think you're trying to make us do all the work
M- I am
He just stared at me!
----
On the way to “Shaver’s Creek’ for Elayna’s class Field trip.
E- do you know why it's called shavers creek? (happy/excited face)
M-why
E- because there's water there and lots of creeks
(Perplexed face) but people don't shave there. (Exasperated face) who would shave in a 'creek'???
------
(In the car come back from something)
T-mom I have a great idea. You know how clubs are awesome. With this water bottle and some PVC pipe I can make one!
He then started beating the car with the water bottle.
--------
1022
E - Mom, is it okay if I say this "I love you more than daddy."?
M  - you love me more than daddy?
E - oh no, I mean " I love daddy more than you."
-- She starts counting, and I'm thinking "What?!" I'm the one laying in bed snuggling with you after having read you a story. How come I'm lower on the list???
E - "99. I love you 99 and I love daddy 100, but maybe you can move up. Before you started at 2 but you moved up fast to 15  ..... (lots of talking....)
"If you're really nice to other people then I'll move you up to 100. I get to decide if you move up or down.

A few days later, Elayna was 'helping' John make bread and he turned on the mixer on when she put her hand down in the bowl. Lots of screaming later she had a very red and swollen hand and John moved down to 20 after that!  Luckily no broken bones, and yes, she is still double jointed! The doctor can now say she's had a bread mixer injury!

I’m sure there’s been more… but this is all we got written down!  Thanks for sharing our year with us!

Alter Egos!!!

A while back, not sure when, John started calling our kids by their silly names calling them their super hero names.

Weston; Captain Why,  why you ask? Because he has asked Why? about everything since he was 3!!

Tyler; Were Squirrel.  When we moved to Columbus and lived in our little blue house in Upper Arlington, there was a period of time when Tyler was exhausted. Days, weeks, almost months in fact. He was just tired all the time. The area where we lived also had A LOT of trees around and tons of buckeye nuts everywhere. We would find piles and piles of nuts in various locations in the house and Tyler's room especially and soon put two and two together and decided that as soon as the night came and we thought everyone was asleep Tyler would change into a squirrel, like a were-wolf, but a squirrel instead, and go hunting for nuts.  So in the morning there were piles of nuts and a very tired Tyler!

Elayna; Swisher pants.  Ya, I'm not 100% certain on the origin of this name but I think it came from John calling Elayna swisher because her hair would swish around. Pants.... it just fit for some reason. Her whole 'name' is Lulu Swisher pants! Which Elayna repeatedly tells me as she points out that I missed the LuLu on her shirt.

So with all the talk of Super hero names, John gave he and I the names Mr. and Mrs. Awesome so our whole family could be a super hero family!  We decided it would be fun to make it official and have shirts made up.  I worked on the shirts for a while and being very secretive about it too, so it could be a fun surprise at Christmas. Sadly one day I didn't stick around the computer when I was closing everything down and walked away. I wanted to show the kids something else and was 2 steps behind them when they ran into the office and saw the open page showing the badges. I talked it off as something I was doing for some other time. Luckily though, the kids were really excited about it so I was looking forward to making the shirts even more!  We found cute/fun pants at land's end and I did a color match to them for the shirts.  All in all, it was a success.  Now I just need to make a real shirt for Tyler since he ended up with a short sleeve version until Target could stock the long sleeve shirt I wanted!

It's looking a lot like Christmas!

I have never been big on Christmas countdowns. I've seen some of the cutest and most ornate advent calendars and always thought it would be fun to do something like that, but it's just not in me to try.  A few years ago, my mother-in-law gave us a very cute advent calendar which she had made. (Sorry no pictures, a description will have to do.) It's a 24 cup mini muffin tin with cute little round covers that go over each opening and are held in place with magnets. Sandy spent some quality time making this and it really is cute, so we've used that each year since but haven't really done well in filling each cup. Mostly I don't like the idea of putting in candy that the kids then are obliged to eat before bed each night. Somehow that doesn't speak to me of calm and restful nights!

I started looking around online and found a lot of families will do an advent calendar of activities and scriptures instead of food/candy or presents. I liked that idea. So I set out to have a list of 24 activities that we could do each night throughout the month of December up to Christmas.  About a year ago I told John that I wanted to start doing more with the holiday's. Actually participating and doing things so our kids would have fun and fond memories of doing things together as a family instead of the half done jobs or last minute plans.  Well, since I made that goal we've tried harder, but not done much more than we usually did. It's just felt more stressful. I think it's just not in me to be that cute and especially that organized for holidays when getting my kids showered more than once a week is already a struggle!  But, this Christmas was going to be different I decided.... We were going to play and have fun and be busy all month long and really enjoy the season!

Here was my list:
1. Christmas concert at the Church
2. Dinner at the Kreiners house, set up tree and garland decorations around house
3. Set up advent calendar, explain the plan for  activities and get kids excited
4. Watch nativity video and start a chain (let the kids make a chain link of any act of service or kindness they do for each other - then we can see how long we can make the chain and wrap around the tree)
5. Go to "Where the Wild things are" performance at Library
6. Christmas movie night with popcorn and hot chocolate (Elayna had a gingerbread activity with friends)
7. Go to library program with Polar Express reading and Train ride
8. Church General Authority Christmas Broadcast
9. Get Christmas presents ready and packed to ship to cousins
10. Paint windows with indoor snow and paint
11. Make homemade snow globes
12. Red, White and Green pizza night
13. Ward Christmas Dinner
14. Community activity - Festival of the Trees
15. Movie night - write letters of appreciation for each other and friends
16. Snowflakes... snowflake quesadillas for dinner, cut snowflakes to hang as activity
17. Scouts pack mtg - caroling
18. Make food gifts for neighbors
19. Deliver neighbor gifts
20. Drive around town, and Park to see Christmas lights
21. Christmas party for Visiting & Home teaching families (crepes and ornament making)
22. Decorate cookies and make gum drop pops. Dinner with Missionaries
23. Kids get to sleep under the tree. (possible movie)
24. Hang Twinkle lights in rooms, open First present (jammies and new Christmas book).
25. Christmas!!!

Awesome list, don't you agree. A month of fun activities that would make for amazing memories and pictures.  Well, as for pictures, I didn't get many at all. Not even of the cool window art which is one activity we actually did do! I think we averaged about 1 activity a week. Instead of setting up the Christmas tree the first Monday (Family home evening) of December, it took a week to get it sort of decorated. By the end I had hung the lights (which took 2 days) and Elayna did most of the rest which meant that everything was generally located in the bottom right portion of the tree.  Every time I saw it I was slightly bothered, but not enough to fix it apparently. John took an evening to redistribute ornaments but it still had some issues throughout the month.  Taking it down was another story... (I usually take the tree and decorations down the week the kids go back to school, but with the weather condition the kids were home so we had decorations up or piled here and there for most of January!)

(Tyler helping decorate the tree, probably a lot of why it took a whole week to set is up!!)

(Elayna's gingerbread house)

We did make it to the library programs, Where the wild things are and the polar express.. They were just what you would expect from a local library program but not exactly the grand and picturesque activities I was envisioning when I made the plans! The play took all of 10 minutes and was done as a theatre class project. Driving to the library took 15 and waiting for it to start and end/clear out took about 30 min!

The polar Express activity was awesome for 3-6 year olds. Elayna was on the older side, but enjoyed it for what it was. Tyler is just happy and goes with the flow for most things, Weston on the other hand - he skipped out on the story reading (realized the movie is better than the book on this one), to read his own book. Then when we took the "Train ride" (trolly) around the block to end up at the bldg. across from the library, aka. Santa's Workshop he kept on reading.  At Santa's workshop you got to sit on Santa's lap, get a picture taken then make a frame to hold that picture.  Everyone had been given a little bag with a bell (size of a tiny pom pom) and a coin which they could then use to 'buy' a toy from the workshop.  Weston wanted the toy, but didn't want to participate in anything else. So we bribed him to sit on Santa's lap and talk to him to get his coin.  He did it, we gave him is coin, and all three kids ended up with a rather cheap toy!  Then we left and decided we probably wont do that next year!

The "Train (trolley) ride"

(Weston in his usuall stance.. book in hand, head down)

I can't blame the kids for not feeling the magic of the moment too much. Santa was looking a little less than jolly!

Santa's "Workshop"

The toys worth being bribed for!

We did go to the Christmas concert at the church which was nice, watched the broadcast (most of it) and went to the Ward Activity. We missed making treats for neighbors, didn't all go caroling because Elayna needed to go to bed early. Missed the Christmas tree festival because weather was so bad. Never made cookies - opted for baked caramel corn for all the class parties and gifts. Had the Home/Visiting teaching party at our house, but did soup instead and never got to the ornaments!  We tried to do something right and let the kids sleep under the tree, but after getting situated and ready Weston and Elayna decided they didn't want to do that. Tyler stayed, not sure why, and then John went down the next morning and laid down on the couch about 1 minute before Tyler woke up so Tyler thought John had slept there all night.  We did get pajamas for Christmas Eve and little lego set, but no new book.  We decided to make our pajamas this year (next post), well the shirt at least, so we could be super heroes... though Tyler got a  substitute shirt because our local Target didn't have the long sleeve shirt I was looking for all month. I finally have the long sleeve shirt now, but haven't made a new badge to iron on to it.

All in all, a disaster of a plan and month!!!  Next year we are planning to set the tree up 2 weeks before Christmas. I'll probably try and do it while the kids are at school, or do most of it and let them finish as a family activity. We will be more realistic and plan 1 activity a week to do as a family instead of every night and movie parties will count. AND I've decided I'm okay using an advent calendar for decoration instead of actual counting down for anything!

December really did take its toll, so by the time Christmas rolled around I really was ready to just be done with it all.  It was just last week (last week of January) that Elayna started playing Christmas music and I realized I was enjoying it. I love Christmas music usually, but this year every time I heard it I felt stressed and anxious.  I'm not ready to start listening to it now, but that one night of feeling peaceful and calm while it was on was really nice!  Here's hoping that next year we can be more settled and be able to enjoy December a little more than we did this year!  I think that by then since we'll finally be in our own home with our own space/pictures/decorations/and such - it will feel better even if everything else is still as crazy as it was this year. At least I hope so!

Just for fun... another winner of an outfit!! Her choice for Sunday actually. There are butterfly's on her shirt and skirt - at least that was her answer when I asked if she was sure her outfit matched!

Weston made an igloo for his mini-figs which he then left outside on the little table and was burried with snow for a good part of the month.

One of the cool things about this area is that we are in the mountain and see deer all the time. This is the road we drive past in our neighborhood and although we see deer tracks in our yard all the time, I don't usually see them so close to our house. They are usually in the fields we drive past.

This month has been hard weather wise, for the whole country I know, but I still have found it to be a little hard at times.  This is a shot after the ice storm. The entire town looked like it had been frosted with fondant icing. When the sun hit it just right it would glare up and blind you if you looked. If there were houses without kids - you would see perfectly 'iced' yards. It last a good 2 weeks and really was amazing. It just made it hard for the kids to play outside at all.
